Pulvex will shortly be expanding their range of mortar raking discs, to cover different diameters, thicknesses of disc and hardness of segment (to cover very hard mortar). But at the moment, the existing mortar raking blade, ie: 125 PG-MRP is an excellent diamond disc that will cover most requirements.

The difficulty when manufacturing a mortar raking disc is getting it to cut at a good rate and not wear out too quickly. As mortar is generally very abrasive, the segment of the disc has to quite hard so that it can resist the abrasiveness of the mortar. Make the segment too hard and it will cut very slowly, or not at all. Make the segment too soft and it will wear out very quickly. The PG-MRP gives very good life and yet cuts at a good rate, and this high performance makes it the diamond disc of choice for many professional pointing contractors.

Another key feature of the PG-MRP is the tungsten carbide kicker segment which prevents undercutting. When cutting or grinding very abrasive materials, such as mortar, there is the possibility that the steel blank (the main body of the diamond disc) will wear thin beneath the diamond segment, this is known as undercutting. If this happens there is a real danger that the blade could lose segments. In order to prevent this the PG-MRP has five tungsten carbide “kicker segments” which are brazed to the leading edge of the gullets. These are there to protect the steel core and prevent undercutting, which is a very important health and safety feature.

If you are a pointing contractor Pulvex would recommend that you give this blade a try and discover just how good a mortar raking disc it is.
